Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area, Carter County TN
August 3, 2007
In upper east Tennessee last week I visited Roan Mt. State Park and Hampton
Creek Cove SNA. At Hampton Creek I took the Shell Hollow trail and at about
3500 feet I ran into several feeding flocks of chickadees, warblers, vireos
etc. It reminded me of that same altitudinal zone in the Latin-American
tropics where you run into mixed feeding flocks (and yes, it was actually cool
in
the shade!). But the altitude was still low enough that the thrush was Wood
Thrush and the chickadees were Carolina Chickadees. Most flocks were seen in
crabapple trees, the attraction being whatever bugs they were finding there.
