Tues, 15 Aug 2006, Ensley Bottoms Area (The Pits), Memphis, Shelby County,
Tn,
Sorry for the late posting of this observation.
Bird numbers were down considerably all over the area compared to Saturdays
visit. I figured after Monday nights cold front that came through some more
birds would have moved in. (They must have just rode the cold front
through).
Visited after work 3:45pm to 5:15pm. Relatively hot.
Not a lot of shorebirds present: Black-necked Stilts I counted only 3, 1 at
the TVA pond and 2 (Mom & Dad) still looking over their late nestlings.
Majority of birds are Least Sandpipers, Pectoral Sandpipers, Lesser Yellow
legs. With no scope I was limited to ID'ing close by birds. Two thirds of
the birds I witnessed were sleeping. At the end of my visit a group of up to
50 mixed birds took off from the south side of the southern most pond and
flew south. Also saw two small groups of birds (6-9) fly off towards the
west towards the TVA plant. Only one small group of Pects (6 birds) flew in
when I was there. Lots of starlings though and some Morning Doves. 3 Red
tail hawks flying/hunting near the HV pwr lines at the south end.
TVA ponds a big difference also, No Egrets and only 3 Grt. Blue Herons. 18
mallards, the Blk Necked Stilt, 3 other shorebirds?, one Turkey Vulture and
the Morn Doves.
Riverport Rd ponds were also disappointing: 2 -Grt Blue Heron, 1 pied billed
Grebe, a handful of eclipse wood ducks and some mallards.Morn Doves also.
Hopefully the weekend will bring more birds.
