Hey, Bates,

Cattle Egrets can be a bit unpredictable in our area (around Knoxville)
occassionally breeding. They have made a bit of a stir this summer around
at least 2-3 places in the Melton Hill Lake area. Not sure if this is
multiple groups or one, wide-ranging group.

There has been a "colony" for several years in the Kingston area. You can
often see the them at a dairy farm off of the Lawnville Road exit on I-40
(sorry, can't give exact directions). Not many people go to look for them
but I think I've always found them the few times I've looked... though I
haven't been there in a couple years.

They are also often reported at the rookery near Kingston Wildlife Refuge
near Kingston Steam Plant. In fact, Boyd Sharp reported some there just
a few weeks ago.

A co-worker who lives out in that general area told me earlier this spring
that she had 4-5 coming up into their yard on the lake.

Wes James found 4-5 on the Knox County Spring Count near Gallaher Bend on
the upper part of Melton Hill Lake back on 25 April 2004.

And back on 3 January 2004, Chuck Nicholson found the first Cattle Egret
for the Knoxville CBC in the Solway area of west Knox Co... again on
Melton Hill Lake a few miles upstream of Gallaher Bend. A co-worker of
Kelly Roy told Kelly about seeing a Cattle Egret in the median of
Pellissippi Parkway in Solway a few days later.

Of course, you would be a good bit NE of Melton Hill up in Andersonville
but just up the Clinch River on Norris Lake instead of Melton Hill Lake.
So it's very noteworthy that you are having them there as well. One of my
co-workers lives in Andersonville (I cover his farm for the Norris CBC)
and fishes the Clinch River. I'll tell him to keep an eye out.
