[TN-Bird] Shorebird Arrivals

July 8, 2006
Ensley Bottoms, Shelby Co. TN
Least Sandpiper numbers have quickly risen into the hundreds while the first
2 Western Sandpipers (a large, long-billed female and a small male) and a
single Semipalmated Sandpiper tried to hide in the masses of Least and
Killdeer. There were two Pectoral Sandpipers today with the large male
dwarfing a
female for a great comparison of the extreme size difference between the sexes
in this species. Solitary Sandpiper numbers were up to 5 while Lesser
Yellowlegs have dropped to 3 birds from last weeks crowd and the only Greater
Yellowlegs was using Horn lake Slough.
A congregation of 31 Black-necked Stilts appeared to be traveling birds with
only 3 apparent pairs formed in the group. They are all probably failed
nesters or birds that never paired this season coming back from farther north.
There was none of the squabbling seen when resident birds get that close
together. They just stood around and rested, preened and fed little. The
paired
birds may attempt late nestings here as we usually have quite a few active
nests
into August. It will be interesting to see how many of the group will still
be around tomorrow.
Killdeers were everywhere and Black-necked Stilts are sill bringing off
broods and setting eggs.
Good Birding !!!
