Concerning the Red Crossbills, there are actually morphological  
differences between the potential species (including size, bill  
shape).  If the split happens, I suspect birders will be able to  
figure out ways to make them field-identifiable.  That's what we do,  
after all.  There are also habitat differences that will give clues,  
even if they can't be definitive.  It might be a good idea to start  
studying and paying attention NOW before the split happens.  I found  
in Colorado that "type 2" and "type 5" crossbills could be  
distinguished in the field much of the time, with moderate  
confidence, after some practice.
