While at Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery today (July 14), I had a bird that was questionable in identification. After looking at the photographs in Shorebirds of North America by Dennis Paulson, I decided the bird best looked like a Common Greenshanks, juvenile plumage (Page 104, plate 28.5).

Here is what I saw:

-larger than a killdeer
-the bird bobbed like a yellowlegs
-the bill was not upturned
-black loral stripe
-white supercilium at least in front of the eye, but may have extended beyond eye
-vertical black bars in the tertials
-belly white
-as it was standing, I saw that the white on the tail went up to the lower back (it possibly went farther)
-greenish leg color
-I did not see any rufous coloration on the bird
-base of the bill was wide, but I did not note its color (the bill may have been all black)

Other birds

dowitcher species
least sandpiper
killdeer
greater yellowlegs
great egrets- 3
lesser yellowlegs
western sandpiper- 2
spotted sandpiper
solitary sandpiper
white ibis- 2 immatures
