Mike Smith, manager TWRA's Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery, phoned about two White Ibis and many shorebirds this morning Wed. July 7,2005. My wife, Betty Reid Campbell, and I arrived there at approx. 10 AM and found them in the first pond on the left just past the power line. The heavy rain prevented the use of our scope and also made good binocular looks difficult. Present were:

Pied-billed Grebe1
WHITE IBIS 2
Great Blue Heron 1
Green Heron 5
Canada Goose approx. 50
Mallard 5

Cooper's Hawk 1
Killdeer approx. 75
Greater Yellowlegs at least 1
Lesser Yellowlegs approx. 30
Spotted Sandpiper 4
Peep Sandpipers approx. 40 (most appeared to be Least but maybe a few Semis or Westerns)
Possibly 1 Stilt Sandpiper
Dowitcher (species?) 4

Kingfisher 1
Purple Martin approx. 20

The Cooper's Hawk made two passes at the shorebirds scattering them for around five minutes each time before they returned to the same pond. We couldn't tell if it caught any shorebirds.Mike Smith said he is in the process of lowering some more ponds which could continue the good shorebird opportunities.

Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery is next to the Clinch River by State Highway 61 between Clinton, TN and Interstate 75.
