The passage of the remnants of Hurricane Dennis made for some exciting
birding on July 11.

An immature BROWN PELICAN was spotted by Dan Jacobson on a channel marker
buoy in the Tennessee River across from The Boat House restaurant on
Amnicola Hwy just south of the Tennessee Aquarium in Hamilton co. The bird
was first seen by a friend of John Henderson by boat early in the afternoon.

John relayed the message to us and Dan found the bird around 7:30 EDT. It
disappeared a few minutes later. Dan Jacobson refound the bird around 8:00
AM on the morning of July 12. It was sitting on top of another channel
marker between the head of McClellan Island and the Boat House restaurant.

I found three SOOTY TERNS and two Forster's above Chickamauga Dam around
4:30 PM. A fourth Sooty joined the other three around 6:00PM. A large
portion of the Chattanooga birding community had the opportunity to see the
terns (28 birders). Another Sooty Tern was seen flying downriver by Clyde
Blum around 8:00 PM near the Boat House Restaurant; this may have been a new
bird or one of the four above the dam. These are the first Hamilton co.
record for the species. These birds were all observed from the parking lot
above (or on) the dam. They were not seen on the morning of July 12.

I found an adult Laughing Gull on the Tennessee River above Nickajack dam in
Marion County around 9:00 AM. The bird was seen from the parking lot above
the dam on the south side (New Hope exit off I-24 side).

The next general meeting of the Chattanooga TOS will be on July 14 at 7:00
PM
at Accension Luthern Church, 720 South Germantown Rd.

Get out in the Field and let me know what you see!
