Eastern AR
On Saturday, I located what I believe is the second nesting of a pair of
Western Kingbirds in Ensley Bottoms. The first nest was abandoned and they
moved
to the south for a second nesting try. I also ran across an adult feeding two
fledged young just west of the Waste Water Treatment plant at Ensley. This
was a real surprise and I suspect they nested somewhere around the steel
plant. I photographed the bird carrying food to the two flying young and
returned
Sunday to see them briefly in the same area but did not see them on Monday.
Dick Baxter had called me last Monday after visiting the Western Kingbird
nests east of Blytheville, AR to report fledglings at one location there. On
Sunday, I had a total of 9 young on and off the nests at three of the
locations.
On Monday, I located another single adult Western Kingbird at a new location
in North Memphis. This bird was feeding a single newly fledged young. This
location is north of the Dewitt Spain Airport along the MS RV.
The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher pair had moved east from their nesting
location on President's Island and were found with two young stashed in a pine
tree.
A possible third was being fed by the male at a remote location to the
north. On Monday, the pair was seen briefly toward the north, as they rested
together but I could not follow them after they flew farther north. I checked
the
area in Tipton Co, where I had seen an adult male Scissor-tailed last month
but had no sightings.
It seems like both species have pulled off successful nestings this year.
Good Birding!!!
