Kay and I have just returned from a 28 day trip around the Dakotas, Wyoming,
Montana and Alberta-Saskatchewan. Great birding with many new life list
entries. Also all the history and scenery over 7000 miles. Our best
recommendation,
before natural gas drilling wrecks it, is Freezout Lake, MT on Route 89
between Great Falls and Glacier/Waterton National Parks. Choteau has
accomodation,
quite good KOA (cabins in the rain if necessary we camped only three nights
because of poor weather). Terrific driving route around the lake, wonderful
birds
even when not at peak migration, which must be incredible especially for
swans and geese and other aquatics. We also added several short-eared owls in
daylight, chestnut collared longspur sharp tailed grouse and much more. Rout 89
is
very scenic through the Belt Mountains. Kay and Ralph Brinkhurst, Lebanon,
Wilson Co. TN
