Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN Jul 22, 2004
LEAST BITTERN: another active nest today, with 4 eggs and adult at nest. This
is the 5th active nest this season. The first four overlapped in time, and
each appeared to have an adult male and female, so it is likely that there are
at least 4 pairs. This nest is 40 ft from the earliest nest, the young from
that nest were out of the nest by July 2 and appeared independent by July 15,
so today's nest could be the second nest for that pair.
We still have a nest with 5 eggs, laid 7/3 - 7/9, and incubating female.
Another nest had 5 eggs 7/7 - 7/16, 4 young 7/18 to date, now with feathers on
bends of wings. The two earliest nests are empty now. There are three nests
that may be older nests and three that look newer and perhaps unfinished.
All of these nests are in an area of perhaps 1 to 3 acres, on the north end.
There could well be other nests on the south or east sides,- habitat is similar
and adult birds evident.
VIRGINIA RAIL: We had three nests with eggs, now long empty, and 1 or likely 2
earlier families. Virginia Rails are calling all the time, answering back and
forth.
WILLOW FLYCATCHER: 2, likely adults or young from the nest we had earlier.
BLUE-WINGED TEAL: Not seen since July 11
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS: At least 25 active nests this season and another 25 or
so old nests, but no longer finding active nests. Lots of young birds.
