This morning we ticked off 49 species in the park between 8:15 and 12:30.
Included were
ten species of warblers and two species of vireos. Highlights are listed below.
Schoolhouse Gap Trail (between the Y in Townsend and Cades Cove):
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Blue-headed Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo
Northern Parula
Black-throated Green Warbler
Black-and-White Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler*
Swainson's Warbler*
Louisiana Waterthrush*
Hooded Warbler
* Adults observed feeding fledged young
Cades Cove Sewage Pond Area
Immature Pied-billed Grebe (no adults seen)
Yellow-throated Warbler
Pine Warbler
As we were walking out the gravel road from the barn and equipment shed
to the loop road we heard a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. While searching for it
we discovered a nest, and observed behavior that was new to both of us.
An adult cuckoo with a Cicada in its bill fluttered down to the ground, spread
both wings and made a squawking sound while moving away from the nest
area. We'd be interested to know if anyone else has observed similar
behavior.
Good Birding to all!
