Rutherford Co.
Florence Rd. area near I-440/I-24

Like Terry Witt, I went in search of the Scissor-tailed Flycatchers
yesterday. After looking for perhaps 20 minutes around their nest
pole area, I found them on the wires just as you head into
Heatherwood Drive, which a couple poles to the east of their former
nest pole. This road goes to the right from Florence Rd. and is just
after one crosses the bridge over I-24 that is slightly north of
I-440. This area is within "spitting" distance of both I-24 and I-440.
The adult Scissor-tailed Flycatchers have actually fledged 4 young
birds. All six got together on the wires for a pre Fourth of July
party. Once mom flew up to the wire and was quickly flanked by a pair
of young "teenagers" on either side of her. What a special sight!
The parents were foraging in the very large bowl depression that was
just behind the wires.
I also found a Dicksissel, announcing it presence with song, along
the edge of the bowl area.
