Hi, TN birders.
Yesterday i used my afternoon break to walk around the block (near Baptist
Hospital here in downtown Nashville). I was surprised to see a large dark
heron-ish bird flying purposefully from east to west over the city, fairly high
up. But i don't know what it was!
In central New York (from where i just relocated) i saw lots and lots and lots
of Great Blue Herons. This bird, from my view of it against the bright sky,
was the same deep blue of a Great Blue, but it was somewhat smaller and didn't
have as long a wingspan or the swooping wingbeats. I also didn't see the long
legs carried behind.
As it was practically midday when i saw it, i guess i can rule out
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. Right???
My best guess would be Little Blue Heron. According to Sibley, the legs are
lighter-colored, so they might not have been easy to see. But the maps tell me
it's unlikely to have been a Little Blue! Arrgg.
What do you all think?
Keep looking up!
Sylvia Anglin
