On Friday evening, 7/19, while guiding a canoe float, I spotted a (1) LITTLE
BLUE HERON and (1) YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON. I also saw (26) BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERONS, (31) GREEN HERONS, 80+ great egrets, 20 + great blues, 30+
double-crested cormorants, (3) OSPREYS and numerous Eastern kingbirds,
prothonotary warblers, cliff and barn swallows, Canada geese, mallards and wood
ducks. We came upon a dozen or so woody hens with ducklings; some would
scatter into cover, some would flap into open water and submerge.
We explored a wide shallow pool across the river from the WMA, where mudflats
have become exposed (the lake is about 18" below 2002 maximum). A dozen
killdeer had gathered there, along with 40+ great egrets, some mallards,
Canadas, and BCN herons. This area can is a mile downstream from Rankin
Bridge. It's an 80-acre field, between the road and the riverbank, that's up
for sale. It should be inviting habitat for early migratory shorebirds.
