Recent sightings/ birding around the County of Campbell, TN
3 AMERICAN COOTS have been at Cove Lake St Pk over a week. I wonder if
these were the ones seen on May 11th Migration Day count? However, I had
not seen them since May 11th if they are the same ones. A Double Crested
Comorant is also there. Jimi and I saw 3 BLACK CROWNED NIGHT HERONS at
dusk last night near the overlook tower- 7-19 (Campbell County, TN)
Even though Warblers are harder to see right now without much singing,
its a great time to get close looks at curious fledglings of them and
other species that will come in close most of the time to spishing. In
one spot on a strip mine ledge above Caryville (Campbell County-Royal
Blue WMA) a few days ago. I observed 2 young Black Throated Green
Warblers, 2 Worm-Eating Wa., a M/F Hooded Warbler and 2 young, Black
and White Warbler along with
Red Eyed Vireos and Scarlet Tanager at very close range. Wishing for a
Cerulean since I had not seen one since Spring, I was rewarded with 2
BATHING in a mud puddle on the side of the rock road as I hiked around
a curve! One was an adult male and the other a young bird.
Cool early mornings the past 3 days here on Cumberland Gap crest (1500 ft
elevation at home ) have caused several species to sing again. I have
heard Yellow-Throated and Blue-Headed Vireo singing as well as both
Scarlet and Summer Tanagers. A Broad Winged Hawk has been cruising the
grounds and was harassed by the smaller birds.
I have a 3rd brood of (4) E.Bluebirds only 4 days old and doing well.
Indigo Buntings, Field and Chipping Sparrows are once again coming to the
feeders. The Goldfinches are not around, so I assume they are nesting
now. Hummingbird activity has been great the past week with many
juveniles and I expect they will continue to grow in numbers in the next
few weeks. Bringing my feeder in at night now is a must, or the
neighborhood raccoon stands on his back feet on the deck railing holding
it in his front paws and drinking like a maniac. Finally caught him in
the act after blaming it on the flying squirrels!
