Jan Shaw has won! Not only was she my first reply, but she nailed it, a
tough job from a description! And the answer is...... Dickcissel !!
Here's the interesting part: I remembered Dickcissel as having a slightly
bi-syllabic quality to the final 3 notes, and my Peterson Eastern tapes
confirmed that. But when I listened to my Western Peterson's tapes I had a
match! This version was more monosyllabic, like my bird in the field.
Interesting. The eastern recording was made in Kansas, the western lists
Texas, Nebraska and Illinois. I don't know if there is a deeper meaning
there. I'll have to get out there and get a look, it has been awhile since
I've had the chance to enjoy this bird!

I need some help identifying a bird song I heard yesterday from a field near
my workplace. The field is located on the eastern Highland Rim, near
Livingston, TN, it is a large field with grasses that are a couple feet high
and harbor Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Yellowthroats, Indigo Buntings,
Eastern Meadowlark and Northern Bobwhite. The song begins with a slightly
higher pitched "tchip", followed by 3 notes in rapid succession on a lower
note, "zub, zub, zub". The last 3 notes are not clear or musical. I imagine
a sparrow singing them from within the grasses, but that is an assumption. I
heard the bird at noon at lunchtime, and again at about 6pm, when I took my
car binos out, but could not find the bird. Once I heard the bird, I
realized that I had heard the bird once before, about a year ago, and had
forgotten about it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
