[tn-bird] Red Crossbills/NC

I know this is a TN bird list, but also often read about birds in the
SMokies, so hope this is ok to post here.
A friend who lives just over the Smokies between Highlands and Franklin, NC
has several (at least 5) Red Crossbills coming to her feeders. This is the
first time she's ever had them and was quite excited about their presence.
One is a first-year male (orange colored). Her supposition is that these
birds have been forced South by a combination of fires in Canada and droughts
in the NE this year. I've told her that they are often seen in the Smokies,
and that they could just be expanding their range with the blight of Woolie
Adelgids there. Her home is at about 3300 ft. elevation. Anyone have an
opinion?
