Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN
Friday, I met Lynn from Nashville and we found the two adults and three young
Western Kingbirds at the steam plant and they were still around on Saturday
morning but by this time the adults had quit feeding the youngsters.
I had a quick glimpse at the male Painted Bunting Friday, which Lynn missed
but I showed her the dead tree where it has been seen the most this year and
the following morning she and her husband got close, long looks in the bright
morning sun. That is a stunning way to start your day.
We watched the Black-necked Stilt circus but I was disappointed that the last
egg from the clutch of eggs I had watched so closely on the fourth had not
hatched and its siblings were now feeding not too far way. There had been at
least 4 more successful hatchings by Saturday all consisted of 4 young, so
the number of Black-necked Stilts is over 250 and setting new record highs
every day. Young of all sizes are present and I saw, for the first time, a
family group flying. I'm sure some of these early hatchers will leave this
crowded place soon.
Good Birding!!!
