We had a similar situation occur recently, with a fledgling Phoebe. The
fledglin was weak, but my husband placed the small bird back into the nest. He
noted that the bird did have a "bald" spot on its head and after handling it,
my husband was covered with these little mites. After a short time he checked
on the bird and it was dead. He removed the nest (there were only 2 birds that
made it to hatching-the other eggs disappeared from the nest.) While carrying
the nest to the woods to dispose of it, the mites came out in force. This was
a new nest built on the same site as the previous nest attempt and also last
year. On the back of the house in between two floodlights, we've got another
nesting Phoebe. This is the second time that this same nest has been used this
season by nesting Phoebes, I could just imagine the critter population in
there! Unfortunately, it is too high on the house to get to easily.

Subject: [tn-bird] Bird out of nest
Having watched birds all my life, I should know what to do in this situation,
but in this case I am not sure.
A young phoebe has fallen out of the nest on my covered back porch. He's
probably a week a way from flying and cannot make it on his own. The parents
seem to ignore him while they feed the three other siblings still in the
nest.
The question: Should I restore him to the nest or leave him for nature to
take its course?
