Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN
Saturday, I found the brood from the third nesting this year for Western
Kingbirds at TVA - Allen Steam Plant. The adults and fledged young from the
first two nestings were nowhere to be found. I saw two adults feeding two
newly fledged young and again one adult kept disappearing possibly to feed
even more youngsters but I never saw but two. These 2 were evidently from the
third nest site and the young are being feed more to the west of the original
sites and in the same area where the adults were disappearing into last week.
These young were in about the same stage and tail length as the others were
last weekend.
As usual the adults and young disappear within a week to 10 days after
fledging. They move into areas closer to the water, I believe as that is
where I found them last year after they disappeared from the plant. Each year
brings new knowledge and more unanswered questions.
We have a definite eastern expansion center for Western Kingbirds here at
Ensley Bottoms in Memphis...............
This seasons totals:
6 adults
3 broods
minimum of 7 young
Good Birding!!!
