Dacus Bar
Mississippi River Front
Shelby Co, TN

I had a little time down town Friday and scanned the emerging sand bars.
Just like clock work, a group of 7 Least Sandpipers and a Semi-Western type
Sandpiper, came down the river and curled in for a landing. It was just a short

rest stop but here were my first Wind Bird Migrants of the season.

On Saturday, there were 2 Black-necked Stilts and a couple of Killdeer but
no other shorebirds. I came across a Least Tern with two chicks, which seemed
to me a little early considering the late fall on the river. Then I noticed a
lot of Least Terns in the air and located a pair of Coyotes searching the
open sand. I've also had River Otter, Beaver, Muskrat and Bobcat on the bar
over
the years. This pair of Coyote were being bombarded by 20 plus terns but
seemed little bothered by the attention. The tern with the chicks disappeared
from my view. Luckily, well sort of, one Coyote discovered a camp site and dug
up a large plastic garbage bag and they both trotted off much to the Least
Terns relief. I took some photos from across the river and have posted them
starting at:
