The following good news was distributed today by the Association of Fish and
Wildlife Agencies of Washington, DC. More details are given in the cited
news release of The Nature Conservancy.
Bob Hatcher
Brentwood, TN
************
... "the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and partners like The Nature
Conservancy and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation
have had success persuading Governor Phil Bredesen to request
substantial funding on a project-by-project basis. On June 12,
Tennessee's legislature passed a budget which included $82 million for
the protection of 124,000 acres on the Cumberland Plateau which has been
identified as a priority habitat in Tennessee's Wildlife Action Plan.
The area provides important habitat for a number of game species,
including Tennessee's only wild elk herd, as well as numerous rare and
imperiled wildlife species that make the area a national hotspot for
wildlife diversity. This effort will conserve nearly 200 square miles
of habitat across four counties-that's six times the size of Manhattan
or a quarter the size of Great Smoky Mountains National Park! This state
funding will be leveraged with additional support from Lyme Timber
Company, The Nature Conservancy, the Tucker Foundation and the Doris
Duke Charitable Foundation. For more information about this innovative
partnership please see TNC's press release:
