I joined several hikers Wednesday in the Smokies hiking from Newfound Gap
via the Appalachian Trail to Charlie's Bunion and beyond. At the Ice Water
Springs shelter, which is about 3mi in on the North Carolina side of Mt
Kephart, I heard a bird singing that surprisingly was a YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER-a beautiful male in full breeding garb. I only had about 15 minutes
there to investigate and was unable to verify breeding. No female was seen.
As we hiked east, I soon heard another one singing very nearly or on the
state line. It was on an inaccessible ridge above me. The spruce trees in
that area are sparse enough that if the first-observed bird is nesting, it
shouldn't be too difficult to locate given enough time. The elevation there
is 5900 to 6100'. I hope to return there soon in hopes of establishing a
breeding record for NC and TN. Other birds of interest included a singing
HERMIT THRUSH in NC just off the AT south of Charlie's Bunion, below 5500'
and eight pair of CANADA WARBLERS on the Grassy Branch and Sweat Heifer
trails at 4500'. BLACK-THROATED BLUES were common throughout the hike and
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS were scattered along the ridge. I heard one PINE
SISKIN near the second yellow-rumped on the state line. All in all it was a
gorgeous and rewarding hike.
