[TN-Bird] Henslow's sparrow breeding; Marshall Cty

Marshall County, TN
3.5 miles north of Caney Springs
Yesterday I observed breeding behavior in a pair of Henslow's sparrows on our
family farm near Chapel Hill, TN. A singing male alerted me to the territory in
one of our fields and then another adult bird was spotted nearby. After
watching these birds for a while I then saw the non-singing bird perched with
dried grass in its beak. It disappeared into a clump of grass and re-appeared
without anything in its beak. I watched it repeat this pattern several times
each time dropping into the same spot. A sketch was made of the spot so that I
could relocate the nest at a later time.
The field where these Henslow's sparrows are nesting is a Big Bluestem (native
grass) field with Sericea lespedeza mixed in. I did hear at least one other
male singing in the field. If anyone is interested in seeing the birds or the
habitat, just contact me off-line. These birds were fairly cooperative and the
male even perched briefly on a barbed wire fence, which I've never seen before.
