Douglas Lake, Cocke county, 6/03/07, midday.
Lake elevation: 981.1', about 12' lower than usual at this time of year.
The lake has receded by almost a foot in the past week; TVA has apparently
decided that the water is needed farther down in the system.
We canoed with Grant Seiber into the Ten Islands area, then back into Rankin
Bottoms. Plenty of good shorebird habitat, but just one late black-bellied
plover spotted with the killdeer, which are increasing in numbers, as are
the great egrets. Wood ducks seem to have disappeared.
Partial list:
Great egret (42)
Great Blue heron (17)
Green heron (5)
Black-crowned night heron
Bald eagle (1 immature)
Am.Coot
Killdeer (23)
Black-bellied plover
Scarlet tanager
