[TN-Bird] Re: Birding Irresponsibility

Just thought I would offer a quick response to the birding=20
irresponsibility post. What the gentleman making the post probably=20
doesn=92t realize is that the post made by Wallace Coffey was not about=20=
some run of the mill birders. Their presence at Quarry Bog could be=20
closer categorized as scientific research rather than some birders=20
trying to add a bird to a life list.
Wallace Coffey is the author of =93Birds of Shady Valley=94 and holds =
not=20
only a state banding permit but a National one as well and has probably=20=
the most extensive historical records of bird sightings in the state.=20
Rick Knight is the author of =93Birds of Northeast Tennessee=94 and has=20=
worked on various migration monitoring projects as well as the=20
Peregrine Falcon restoration and was a member of the team looking for=20
the Ivory-billed Woodpecker in the Pearl River WMA. Dr. Tom Laughlin=20
is an Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at East Tennessee=20
State University and is on the Board of Trustees for the Southern=20
Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. Pages could be written about the=20
above and their contributions made to birding as well as working to=20
preserve habitat.
Quarry Bog is already a protected area under The Nature Conservancy. =20=
Something that is common knowledge in upper East Tennessee but=20
understandably easily overlooked by others in the state reading=20
Wallace=92s post.
I for one am glad when scientific studies and findings are shared in=20
this forum as increased knowledge is typically a good thing. These=20
gentlemen obviously don=92t need me to defend their actions but I felt a=20=
response was warranted however feeble my attempt may be.
