This article was forwarded from Murray Gardler who formerly lived in =20
Memphis and was a member of TOS. Murray works a a guide to the Dry =20
Tortugas and is an excellent birder.
( He identified the first Mangrove Swallow seen in the U.S.) This was =20=

first posted on a Florida list-serv.

=93The Shorebird Guide=94

Kudo=92s to authors O.Brien, Crossley and Karlson.

They have taken a shorebird guide to new heights with the subject
publication.

They, in two sections, one being =93Domestic Species=94 and the other
=93Rarities and Regional Specialties=94 gives one a photographic trip =
well
worth taking.

This photographic guide takes one through the =93life-year system=94 (as
opposed to a plumage system based on molt) of the shorebirds. A journey
from juvenile to breeding male/female plumage=92s through excellent
pictures with accompanying text explaining the cogent points that will
help differentiate a particular species from a similar species is
outstanding.

Another interesting approach is photographs within the species account
that are used to test your skills. They include the species being
featured and ask you to pick that particular species out of a group.
Sometimes, as in the case of the Golden Plover (13 pictures including
quiz) species account, they have a Black-bellied Plover mixed in the
photograph and ask you to pick out the Black-bellied Plover from the
Golden Plovers. Fear not, they have the answers in an =93APPENDIX=94 for =
you
to check your answer.

Although I am not normally a fan of photographic guides, the subject
guide takes shorebird identification assistance to new heights. This
will serve us all well to have in our research library, both as a
teacher and a solver of some of those difficult identification =20
questions.
