Michael, maybe this qualifies as "near the Mississippi River" though we are
probably a hundred miles from it, but there are several great egret nests
in the swamp just west of me. This swamp feeds into a channel that is a
tributary of the South Forked Deer River that eventually runs through
Jackson TN about ten miles from here. If there is anyone who wants to make
an official listing for this county, let me know, and I'll show them to
you, but be warned, it's difficult to see now that trees are leafed out and
the swamp is not easily traversed. It's depths vary all over due to beaver
dams, sometimes too deep for hip waders, and sometimes not deep enough for
boat/canoe. Mud is mucky type, too. As the old fella says who owns this
property "you'll get marred (mired) up to your straddle."
I've not been down that field road in a couple of weeks, so the youngsters
may have fledged but it seemed very active (I couldn't see, but I could
hear them) last time I was there. This is the northernmost tip of Chester
County, and in fact, that swamp may be in Madison.
