Police Investigate Arson of Woodpecker Viewing Area
Monday June 13, 2005 2:43pm
Brinkley, AR (AP) - Authorities say an arsonist set fire to a viewing area
popular with people trying to spot the rediscovered ivory-billed woodpecker. The
fire was near Brinkley at a trestle at the Dagmar Wildlife Management Area off
U.S. 70.
Trooper Barry Roy of the Arkansas State Police said it was easy to determine
the fire was set on purpose. The structure was burned at both ends.
Investigators are looking for a suspect.
The ivory-billed woodpecker was thought to have been extinct but its
rediscovery was announced earlier this year, touching off a boom of
bird-watcher tourism in the east Arkansas wilderness. The Arkansas Game and Fish
Commission is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest
and conviction of the arsonist.
Officials plan to replace the burned structure with a $50,000 steel
platform. The trestle was found burning June 3.
