Subject: Women's Lib?
A pair of red bellied woodpeckers (we called them peckerwoods in Arkansas)
has been coming to the peanut/raisin tube feeder on my patio and recently
brought along their offspring. Today, the feeder was empty, I was working on
the patio when the male landed on a gingko trunk about 5' from me and
proceeded to chirp at me as if to say "get busy...fill my feeder" so I did fill
it
and came inside. Have not seen him back out there but while chopping
veggies in the kitchen I watched the young bird successfully control the feeder
about ten minutes. She is as large as the parents but has only a faint dot of
red at base of bill so looks sort of bald headed (I'm guessing female).
She is very adept with that big bill and would peck, peck, peck seeming to get
bites of peanut every time. Then she would pant awhile and then start pecking
again. An adult blue jay tried to land and got pecked at, a mockingbird tried
three times before going away. A brave little sparrow actually landed but got
sent off, a pair of grackles and a juvie landed on a nearby limb and tried
several times only to get pecked at. Even a cardinal came with no luck.
Finally, I think the young lady got a raisin because she flew.
The jay was next up but he was not nearly as adept in getting peanuts, seeming
to drop every other one.
