[TN-Bird] "winter finches" in Smokies

Hi folks,

This year seems to be a good one for seeing Pine Siskins in Great
Smoky Mountains National Park. It's also better than the last couple
years for Red Crossbill.

Sorry I didn't post this earlier, but I ran 3 BBS routes in the last
3 days. Coupled with 4 banding days in the last 2 weeks and 2 more
coming in the next 2 days (If Arlene allows...) I've been pretty
straight out.

I had Pine Siskins on 3 of my stops along Clingman's Dome Road, and
at 2 of my 15 stops along Newfound Gap Road. At one stop, a named
overlook (sorry I forget the name) I had 11 siskins all about me.
They were in the spruces, going to the ground for Dandelion seeds,
gravelling in the parking lot, chasing a BLack-throated BLue Warbler,
and generally not being very secretive. Loud ZEeeeeeee-IPs were
everywhere.

I've also seen siskins in Gatlinburg at 2 locations in the last 2
months.

Yellow-breasted Chats also seem to be doing well in Cades Cove. I
had them on 7 of the 15 stops there on Thursday, with the bulk being
around the northwest corner of the cove, from Rich Mountain Road to
Cable Mill.

If you bird in the Smokies, I would REALLY appreciate if you could
send me your list, which I'll forward to the park. They are trying
to build their sightings database.

Charlie
