Friday morning, June 10, I ran the Belotes Bend Breeding Bird Survey
route in Sumner County, Tennessee. At stop #20, I was rewarded with a
singing Bewick's Wren. Stop #20 is at a small creek crossing
approximately 7 miles east of Gallatin, TN on State Highway 25, then 2.8
miles north on Greenfield Lane. The site has houses within view on the
west side of the road and a couple dozen cattle grazing on the east
side. Fescue pastures with woody fencerows and patches of woods
dominate the area. Coordinates for the point are 36.43424213
-86.32354447 (DD NAD83).
The bird sang within the first minute of the count and continued
singing within 6m of the point for the duration of the count. I stayed
around for a few more minutes, taking notes and observing the bird
before moving on to point 21.
From the beginning of the BBS, this species has declined to the point
of being almost nonexistent in Tennessee today. As many as 4 Bewick's
wrens were counted on the route in the 1960. A graph of the data for
this species on the route may be found at
http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/cgi-bin/rtegif.pl?001118492511.rt
I made a wide arc through Red Boiling Springs and Carthage on the way
back to Nashville looking for loggerhead shrikes. Unfortunately, I did
not find a single one.
If you observe Bewick's wrens or loggerhead shrikes at any time in the
region. Please contact me with location information.
