[TN-Bird] FW: BBS quiz time

I bicycled this route (the part from Sugarlands to Clingman's Dome and
back, preceded by a leg from Sugarlands to Townsend and back) in early
May. At that time, the most abundant bird on the lower elevation
stretches was probably the Red-eyed Vireo. The most abundant birds on
the higher elevations were Black-throated Blue Warblers and Dark-eyed
Juncos. The junco probably outnumbered the warbler. I say probably
because I wasn't keeping close track of numbers (hard to do when
pedaling). And there were times when the birds were hard to hear - both
during the 45+ mph descents amd when the excessively abundant and
excessively loud herds of Harleys would pass.

It was interesting to see 3 or 4 family groups of Canada Geese along the
Little River upstream of the Y; my pace line almost took out one family
group in the road. Does anyone know how long they have been nesting in
this part of the park?

HI folks,

I thought I'd have a little fun with some of you range map and habitat
geeks. Get out your copy of Stupka's and Alsop's and Nicholson's books
and see if who can come the closest on guessing what the top birds were
on my BBS route today, in terms of number of individuals, and number of
stops they were seen/heard at.

Here is the route I took: Newfound Gap Road from Sugarlands Visitor
Center to Clingman's Dome Road. Then I drove Balsam/Heintooga.
(Sevier County, TN and western North Carolina). All within Great Smoky
Mountains NP.

For those of you not familiar with Breeding Bird Surveys, the protocol
is to start at 5:48 am (at least for this route) and stop every 1/2
mile. Get out of the car and look and listen for 3 minutes.

Good luck! I'll post the top guessers. And I'll even let Fred and
Chuck play if they want to.

I promise not to post any answers that are way off...

Charlie
