Charlie,
For that area, I would say it would run a close race between the Eastern
Towhee, American Robin, and the Tufted Titmouse.
However, it seems you think we might be surprised so what if I said the Wood
Thrush??
I have participated in the Breeding Bird Survey in southeast Georgia and
what a challenge.. the person who had a fantastic recognition of songs and
even chips.. certainly a good birder by ear...by some means never picked up
on the Towhee. So I would be the one who heard that one. My contribution...
And they were just about at every stop.
