A few years back I found and photographed Purple Martins nesting in the 
letters of a BP Service Station down in Mississippi. The photo appeared in the 
Purple Martin Magazine.

The other day while checking on the Western Kingbird nest in Tunica Co, I 
found out that Purple Martins are not brand name faithful. I photographed them 
nesting in the letters of a Shell Oil Sign at a service station. 

They actually in both instances apparently built up what looked like a mud 
retaining wall to keep the eggs from rolling off. I would imagine when they use 
to nest on natural surfaces here in the East that their construction was more 
elaborate when nest holes were not abundant or provided by humans.
