[TN-Bird] Godwit and Western Kingbird Update

Late this afternoon, I met Don McKee, up from the coast for a sure bet Big
Year Tick, at the Western Kingbird nest and we were immediately greeted by
proud
dad flycatching from a wire with mom sitting on the nest nearby. I question
her choice of sites as she is in full afternoon sun. I hope we get chicks and
not poached eggs.

After Don and his wife left, I stayed around and finally the 3rd bird
appeared and again it stayed in and around the same location as it did on
Sunday but
no luck on locating the nest if there is one. He sure acts like there is
another and only time will tell.

At Ensley, a search did not turn up the Hudsonian Godwit and a lot of other
birds had left. I located only 3 Semipalmated Sandpipers and after a weeks
absence there were 3 Least Sandpipers. They better hurry as their cousins will
be
making their way back in just 15 days.

The pair of Shoveler Ducks still hang together with mating Stilts all around,
there is still time for them to get the idea. The single male Blue-winged
Teal that has been seen by itself recently had a reason to linger; this
afternoon
I found a female Blue-wing with at least 8 small downy young. A nice surprise
as these ducks don't breed here every year.

Two male Western Kingbirds appear to be standing guard over nesting females
at the steam plant. I've narrowed one pair down and suspect I know where the
nest is. The other is in an even more remote area and will be harder to locate
but I'll find them both and nail them before long.

Good Birding!!!
