Hi folks,
Well since our son Allan arrived on the 26th, I've not been in the
field much. But I still manage to find some birds here and there..
at our home in south Blount County:
nests found: Brown Thrasher, American Robin, Carolina Chickadee,
House Finch, Blue Jay (good luck to all other nests) Red-bellied
Woodpecker. Bluebirds seem to be teasing us by starting, but not
finishing nests. 3 so far this year. I also think Downy Woodpeckers
have a nest in the yard, but I haven't located it.
Observed: Chuck-Will's Widow, Eastern Screech-owl, Yellow-billed
Cuckoos (3 heard at once), Chimney Swifts,
Foothills Parkway in east Blount County:
all the locally common warblers
Wild Turkey with poults
Northern Rough-winged Swallows nesting under bridge over river
The Greenbelt in Maryville/Alcoa:
Black-crowned Night-heron
Great Blue Heron
Yellow-crowned Night-heron (there again today)
Mallard
Canada Goose
Rock Pigeon
Mourning Dove
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Chimney Swift
Belted Kingfisher
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
Great-crested Flycatcher
Eastern Phoebe
Northern Rough-winged Swallow
Tree Swallow
Barn Swallow (lots of nests under 3 bridges)
Blue Jay
Carolina Chickadee
Tufter Titmouse
White-breasted Nuthatch
Carolina Wren
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Wood Thrush
Easter Bluebird
American Robin
Gray Catbird
Norhtern Mockingbird
Brown Thrasher
European Starling
White-eyed Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo (though I also heard a Yellow-throated, but just once,
and I'm not sure)
Common Yellowthroat
Yellow-breasted Chat
Scarlet Tanager
Northern Cardinal
Indigo Bunting
Eastern Towhee
Song Sparrow
chipping Sparrow
Red-winged Blackbird
Common Grackle
Brown-headed Cowbird
House FInch
American Goldfinch
House Finch
Allan, of course, was only able to identify about half these species.
We're still working on his chip note identifications :-)
