[TN-Bird] Re: Locally abundant Wood thrushs along Natchez Trace

Wood Thrushes do seem to be doing well along the Natchez Trace, at least for
now.
For several years I did point counts at Laurel Hill WMA just off the 'Trace
in Lawrence Co. In the proper habitat (which there is a lot of there), shady
ravines with beech and maple and other woodland but especially along streams,
they were persent in good numbers. Along one route, next to a stream, there was
an active nest in sight at 2 consecutive points.
Just south of Liepers Fork, in Williamson County, Burns Branch parallels the
Trace for 2 or 3 miles, and some of this is good Wood Thrush habitat. I have
found several nests in this area. And of course the song serenade is
unsurpassed! Unfortunately the best Wood Thrush slope along here, and the site
of a
couple of those nests, is directly in the path of the 4-lane Highway 840!...
As"840" progresses, at this section of the Parkway a year from now, there will
be
the sound of chain saws and bulldozers. And along with Acadian Flycatcher,
Worm-eating Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, Kentucky Warbler and others, there
will be a little less habitat for Wood Thrush. Enjoy it while you can.
