12 June 2002
Decided to check Shelby Forest today. Managed to find the two target
species I was trying for; a Worm-eating Warbler at the reliable location this
year not far down the trail at Picnic # 2, and Scarlet Tanager, one heard on
the main road just south of there. In all, I found 12 species of warblers at
Shelby Forest -- essentially all that could be reasonably expected there in
breeding season ( I would not really expect Ovenbird or Black-and-white, but
they are possible). On the trail at Picnic # 3 there was a Swainson's and 3
Ceruleans. Also a Wild Turkey in the park.
Checked Eagle Lake; there were 5 species of herons: lots of Great Blues and
Great Egrets plus Green, and an adult Little Blue and Yellow-crowned Night.
Also a Pied-billed Grebe.
Figuring I was building a pretty good day list, I quickly drove thru Shelby
Farms, adding Dickcissels, Shrike, and of course, Canada Geese. Driving back a
Eurasian Collared-Dove flew right in front of the car, just blocks from home.
And once home, House Finches made for species # 80. Not bad for just Shelby
County on a day in mid-June when you're not really trying too hard.
