[tn-bird] Sharp-shinned Hawk in Gibson Co.

Yesterday evening (Sunday, June 9) I was standing in a parking lot in
Humboldt, Gibson Co. talking to some friends when I noticed a lot of birds
in the area giving alarm calls. I looked up and saw several Purple
Martins, 2 Eastern Kingbirds, and lots of Grackles and Red-winged
Blackbirds circling nearby and repeatedly giving loud alarm calls. A few
seconds later I saw a Sharp-shinned Hawk fly out of a nearby tree upwards,
circle once, and then make a diving pass at a Mourning Dove below it. It
missed the dove and then landed in another tree where the attention from
other species of birds continued. A few moments later the hawk left the
tree with no less than 100 other birds trailing behind and disappeared into
a grove of pine trees a few blocks away!
This was my first nesting season record of a Sharp-shinned Hawk for Gibson
County.
Good birding,
Mark Greene
