Today, Thursday, June 6, 2002, a cool, rainy morning in Nashville, Tennessee, 
my six-year-old grandson Brandon, who just arrived from south Texas last 
night, came running into our bedroom to tell us all the critters he had seen 
out our back door in "the jungle" (our back yard and the southern hardwood 
forest beyond).  For the next hour, Brandon and I watched the comings and 
goings of the wildlife to the bird feeders and other attractions.

Not a bad morning: a family of five downy and a pair of red-bellied 
woodpeckers; families of chickadees, titmice, and nuthatches; nesting phoebes 
and Carolina wrens; two ruby-throated hummingbirds; blue jays, cardinals, and 
towhees; crows, cowbirds, and a few grackles; two chipmunks and six 
squirrels; and one deer and two coyotes.  All that by 8:00 a.m.

Prodigal summer, indeed!  And it's not even summer yet.  Barbara Kingsolver, 
eat your heart out!
