[tn-bird] Rose-Breasted Grosbeak building nest/near Cross Mt./TN

This am, 6-5-02, Jimi and I observed a female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK
building a nest in a Black Locust Tree located on a strip mine shelf
above Caryville, TN (Campbell County.) Elevation was 2478. The nest was
being built in the top of a flimsy locust tree at apx. 15-18 ft. high
that towers several feet above any adjacent trees. The tree had no other
tall vegetation/thicket area near the same height, however the underbrush
below was dense. The primary material she was bringing seemed to be light
colored "rootlet" looking vegetation. The male was not seen during a
period of 15 minutes. The female "chinked' constantly while she was
working.

According to Nicholson's, "Atlas of the Breeding Birds of TN" records of
RBGrosbeak nesting is uncommon in E. Tennesssee (Cumberlands) and the
date mentioned for probable breeding is mid- May shortly after their
Spring arrival. There are records of "confirmed" nesting in Campbell
County, (as well as a few other sites with"possible and probable"
nesting stats,) nevertheless this is the most recent record of nesting
activity.
