[tn-bird] Another birding column

Another birding column made its debut today on the Sunday Outdoor page
of The Johnson City Press. I first volunteered to write the column 15
years ago when it was becoming obvious that Kathryn Jones' obligations
to her ailing husband coupled with her failing vision made it clear that
she would not be able to continue writing her column.
Finally, with new ownership, the opportunity came, and this time the
invitation came from the publishers.
James Brooks on Birds will continue to answer questions and make
suggestions for the backyard birder, and will do so in a light-hearted
manner. On the other hand, it will be from the perspective of an
international birder with an interest in taxonomy, so when I talk about
a local or regional bird, I will usually place it into its context of
similar relatives I've seen in other countries.
There will also be some standard sub-headings, such as Far afield: This
week that makes mention of the Connecticut Warblers seen at Radnor Lake,
but it could also take on a wider context.
Actually local birding columns are getting to be the norm nowadays. We
have them in the Jonesborough Herald-Tribune, the the Knoxville
News-Sentinel and I'm sure other Tenn-bird readers know of other examples.
The resumption of a column in the Press is part of a stated objective of
the new ownership to expand our Outdoors page to take on more
conservation, ecological and non-consumptive outdoor recreation topics.
No longer does an animal have to be killed to make the Outdoors page.
The winds of change are blowing.
