Land Between the Lakes area (LBL); Stewart Co
Paris Landing SP (Henry Co.)
I spent a few hours this morning at LBL, to get into some more extensive
woods than I have access to close to home. Nothing great, but a wonderful
day to be out. I finished with 25 species of warblers on the day, highlight
being Canada Warbler finally. I seldom get Canada around my local area, but
had great looks at two today, and another singing. Other migrant warblers
were led by Blackpoll and Magnolia, easily 20+ of each. Tennessee was
numerous, and multiples were also seen of Bay-breasted and Yellow-rumped,
but only one Blackburnian and Palm. All of the locally breeding species were
well-represented, including Blue-winged at three locations.
Vireos were highlighted by looks at a couple of singing Philadelphia, but no
Blue-headed. Thrushes were also very good, with quite a bit of time watching
all 3 transient Catharus Thrushes feeding in the road. I saw 4 Veeries, at
least a dozen Swainson's, and a couple of Gray-cheeked. Swainson's and
Gray-cheeked were singing, but I never heard a Veery. Rose-breasted Grosbeak
numbers seemed down, but there were still several around. Lincoln's Sparrows
popped up out of several brushy areas I stopped at. A couple of Broad-winged
Hawks put on a nice show for me, the raptor highlight of the day.
I have spent more time in the field this spring than I have been able to in
the last couple of years, but I'm still yet to hear or see a Black-billed
Cuckoo, Yellow-bills continue to be numerous though. It's about time for
Empidonax migration to kick in, and here's to hoping for a Mourning or
Connecticut Warbler, which would wind-up the spring Warblers for me, though
I still need to see a Cape May.
A quick stop by Paris Landing didn't produce anything but a young Herring
Gull and 3 Common Loons.
I posted a few shots from today (Kingbird, Broad-wing, Thrushes) in my
Spring 2007 gallery, the 1st one is at:
