sorry about the hair trigger mouse ..

Douglas Lake, Cocke county
5/7/07, 12:00 - 6:00 PM
Lake elevation: 979.1

At noon, we parked by the WMA sign at the intersection of Rankin Hill & Hill
Rds., then walked out to the stand of big cottonwoods and willows along the
riverbank: quite a bit of passerine activity there. Next, we surveyed the
rising lakewater and pond near the coal tipple, then put in a canoe near
the Leadvale trestle. Most of the waterbirds we saw were in the flooded
grassy area and inlet west of the trestle.

Partial list:
Wood duck (52)
Double-cr. cormorant (42)
Great egret
CATTLE EGRET
Green heron (2)
GLOSY IBIS (2)
Osprey (10 - 1 perched by a nest near McCowan's Creek, could be nest #9 in
the area)
Am. coot (16)
Killdeer (3)
Gr. yellowlegs (2)
Lesser yellowlegs (25)
Solitary sandpiper (3)
Spotted sandpiper (7)
Least sandpiper (6)
Yellow-billed cuckoo (2- FOS)
Belted kingfisher (FOS)
WARBLING VIREO (2 - FOS)
Cliff swallow (300+)
Cedar waxwing (4- FOS)
BAY-BREASTED WARBLER (2 - the first we've ever seen)
Prothonotary warbler (10)
Common yellowthroat (2 - FOS)

I have photos of the ibises, the b-b warbler, and the cattle egret. I don't
yet have an online archive, and photos apparently aren't included with
TN-bird entries, but I can email images to anyone interested. There's no
practical way to approach the ibis viewing area by land, but we might be
able to arrange a trip by water for anyone interested.
