[TN-Bird] Bird banding volunteer opportunity in Knox County

Calling all TN-birders (and friends),
If you have ever wanted to learn more about bird banding and try it
for yourself, here is your opportunity! In cooperation with the Seven
Islands Foundation, the Knoxville Chapter of the TOS, and the Knoxville Zoo,
we will begin our third season of bird banding at Seven Island Wildlife
Refuge in SE Knox County, and we need more volunteers.Â
We set up 12 bird nets at sunrise once every ten days between late-May and
early-August, and we handle between 40 and 60 birds every morning
we have our nets open (see the list of tentative dates below). We
usually finish by lunchtime. This is a MAPS (Monitoring Avian
Productivity and Survival) project run in cooperation with the
Institute for Bird Populations (www.birdpop.org), and has been
adopted by the KTOS. We will offer an Introduction to Bird Banding course on
May 20 at 7 am to noon at Seven Islands (see the TOS website for directions
www.tnbirds.org) including a slide show and demonstration bird banding. If you
are interested, let me know (jgiocomo@xxxxxxx). All ages and experience levels
are welcome (Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult). If you think
you might be able to volunteer, even if it is just one or two mornings
throughout the summer, now is your chance to get involved! Some of the more
common birds we capture include Field Sparrows, Blue Grosbeak, American
Goldfinch, Carolina Wren, Common Yellowthroat, Grasshopper Sparrow, Northern
Mockingbird, Northern Cardinal, Yellow-breasted Chat, Prothonotary Warbler, and
Orchard Oriole, to name a few. If you ever wanted to get involved in active
bird research and monitoring, this is a great opportunity. Bring a friend or a
neighbor kid (if you donâ??t have your own).
Thanks,
