[TN-Bird] Sightings Report 6 May07, Ensley Bottoms area "The Pits", Memphis, Shelby County
- From: "John Walko" <walko@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- To: <tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>, "'Rob Peeples'" <wpeeples@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- Date: Sun, 6 May 2007 21:35:44 -0500
Location: TN 2 Mem, Maxson Wastewater Lagoons(The Pits)/Earth Complex
Observation date: 5/6/07, 1020am-220pm
Notes: Teal still present in the back corner of pit #5 and in the
tailings puddles but not in the same numbers as last week. Shrike seen on
the wires near the outfall plant over the grass fields. Black-necked Stilts
all paired up and scattered on pits 4 & 5 on nests. Black-bellied Plovers
seen on Pit #4 North side levee area on a slim grassy strip, one showed good
coloring under neck to belly hopefully my pictures came out.
Started day up at the outfall area scrub woods, finally got my life Painted
Bunting. Orioles, Buntings, Tanagers in the scrub and trees. 23 Species seen
just in the vicinity of the outfall plant.
Pits were hot 89+ degs today. #4 had few birds. Geese, BN Stilts and the
Plovers were the highlights. If there was a hundred birds spread out over
the lagoon it was alot.
Now over on the big lagoon #5, was another story, not as many as middle of
last week but still good size flocks spread out. The back corner was abuzz
with birds as 500-600 birds were back there feeding.
Met Q.B. Gray when I turned around to exit and talked abit. He pointed out
the White-rump Sandpipers that I had missed. Overall a good birding day for
three hours. * Two lifers on the day.
