Lake County
Phillipy Pits, etc.
I spent a long time in Lake County this afternoon looking for the Ruff that
Mike Todd found on Friday and refound the bird in another pool just south of
the main Phillipy Pits. This is on the New Markham Levee Road just south of the
jct. with Phillipy Road. It was in a pool back off of the road behind a line of
trees. There is a field road going back to this area. The bird was feeding in
the grass on the far edge of the water with several Lesser Yellowlegs and
Pectoral Sandpipers. There was also a Black-necked Stilt in the area.
At the main Phillipy Pits there was a big flock of birds that were stirred up
when I arived by a Northern Narrier flying over the water. I immediately
spotted 4 White-rumped Sandpipers in the flock (my first for the spring). Other
species present were:
Greater Yellowlegs - 5
Lesser Yellowlegs - 16
Solitary Sandpiper - 3
Spotted Sandpiper - 1
Pectoral Sandpiper - 30
Stilt Sandpiper - 11
Dunlin - 2
Least Sandpiper - 4
In a quick scan of Lower Blue Basin from Champey Pocket at Reelfoot Lake I saw
no gulls, terns or ducks! Osprey nest in the Baldcypress trees south of Champey
Pocket towards Keystone Pocket had an adult bird sitting on the nest. I saw two
Ring-billed Gulls on the Mississippi River at Bessie Bend.
On the way up I had my first Mississippi Kite for the year as I headed north
out of the Nauvoo area in Dyer County on Hwy. 78 just before crossing the Obion
River bridge.
Good birding,
