have never seen take off from the ground (which may well be a result of
limited observations on my part rather than their lack of ability) include
loons, grebes, ruddy ducks, and coots. Can these, and others, in fact not
take flight from land?

Coots can take off from land and do quite frequently at Robco Lake, where
they graze on the grass away from the water. This occurs mainly when chased by
the neighborhood dogs. It's struggle and their awkward run is as long or as
short as it has to be, in proportion to the speed and agility of the dog;o)
Red-throated Loons nest on small ponds and marshes, they can lift into the
air directly from water, like Mallards and other puddle ducks, with a powerful
down stroke pushing against the waters surface. They also have been observed
taking off from land in the same manner. This is the only loon that can do
so. In many ways Red-throated are a very different breed in actions, habits
and
structure from the other loons.
